The short answer

Last Christmas Post to Australia 2026

Royal Mail hasn't published a last day for posting to Australia for Christmas 2026, and it didn't publish one for 2025 either. The last dates it did publish, for Christmas 2024, were Tuesday 3 December for International Standard and Saturday 7 December for tracked, so aim to post by the end of November. We keep a tracker of what Royal Mail has said, year by year, and update it when anything changes. Miss that, and you can still send a Christmas box that's packed in Sydney, ordered until Tuesday 15 December for most addresses.

Key dates at a glance

  • Royal Mail International Standard (airmail): 2026 date not published. In 2024 it was Tuesday 3 December with online postage, or Tuesday 26 November at a Post Office.
  • Royal Mail International Tracked: 2026 date not published. In 2024 it was Saturday 7 December online, or Friday 6 December at a Post Office.
  • Royal Mail International Economy (surface): the 2024 date was in early October, and the delivery aim is up to 80 working days. It won't make Christmas from here.
  • Same Skies Christmas box, packed in Sydney: order by 11:59pm Sydney time on Tuesday 15 December (12:59pm UK time). WA: Monday 14 December. NT and regional: Thursday 10 December.
  • Christmas Day: Sydney is 11 hours ahead of the UK, Perth is 8.

Every date above comes with its source below. The 2024 dates are a guide only, so check Royal Mail's live Christmas page before you post, in case it adds Australia later in the season.

Royal Mail's last posting dates for Australia, Christmas 2026

The awkward truth first. Royal Mail's Christmas 2026 page lists UK dates (1st Class by Monday 21 December, for example), but its international tab has no dates at all. It just says to post as early as possible and points you to delivery times in its country guides. Its 2026 PDF says the same. The Christmas 2025 page and PDF had no international dates either.

The most recent country-by-country dates Royal Mail published for Australia were for Christmas 2024. They're in the table as a guide, labelled for what they are. The weekdays won't line up with 2026, and the dates moved earlier between 2023 and 2024 (the online tracked date for Australia went from 11 December to 7 December).

Royal Mail service to Australia Delivery aim now 2024 date, online postage (guide only) 2024 date, at a Post Office (guide only)
International Economy (surface) 15 to 80 working days Wednesday 9 October Wednesday 2 October
International Standard (airmail, untracked) 6 to 7 working days Tuesday 3 December Tuesday 26 November
International Tracked, and Tracked & Signed 5 to 7 working days Saturday 7 December Friday 6 December

Sources: delivery aims from Royal Mail's Australia country guide, read 21 October 2026. The 2024 dates are from Royal Mail's Christmas 2024 page (archived copy). Royal Mail had not published 2025 or 2026 international dates when we checked.

Two things to know before you queue. International Tracked & Signed is now a documents-only service (750g), so a present goes International Tracked (up to 2kg) or Tracked Heavier (up to 20kg). And surface mail is out: the 2024 Economy date for Australia was in early October, and its aim of up to 80 working days runs well past Christmas. Our advice is to have airmail parcels posted by the end of November, which keeps you inside both 2024 dates with a few days to spare.

Parcelforce Worldwide

Parcelforce's Christmas page still shows its 2025 UK dates and nothing for international services. Its Australia directory gives globalexpress from 4 working days and globalpriority at 5 to 9 working days, depending on which part of Australia it's going to. Courier comparison sites publish their own express cut-offs each year, so check the date and the price together.

Sending Christmas cards to Australia from the UK

Cards follow the letter service, not the parcel one. A card in an envelope weighing up to 100g goes as a Letter, and on Royal Mail's Australia guide International Standard costs £3.60 with a delivery aim of 6 to 7 working days. International Economy saves you 10p and can take up to 12 weeks, so it's no use for cards posted in December.

There's no separate Christmas card date for Australia either. Royal Mail's Christmas 2026 page just says to post cards and gifts early, particularly for international delivery. The nearest guide is the 2024 International Standard date above: Tuesday 3 December with online postage, or Tuesday 26 November at a Post Office. So write the cards on a dark November evening and get them in the postbox by the end of the month.

Missed it? An e-card or a short video message lands on Christmas morning their time, and nobody in Australia will mind that it didn't come with a stamp.

The later route: a gift that starts in Australia

If the post office queue in late November isn't going to happen, there's another way to send a gift to Australia from the UK: buy it from a business that packs and delivers inside Australia. You order from your sofa in the UK, and the parcel only ever travels a domestic Australian route. Our pages on Christmas hampers to Australia and Christmas gifts to Australia have the options side by side. You can also build your own box from the UK and choose every piece. Not sure what to send? Our gift ideas to send to Australia from the UK are sorted by person.

That's how Same Skies works. Lewis and Jess pack every box by hand in Sydney, Monday to Friday, and send it with Australia Post. Lewis grew up in the UK, and his mum, Samantha, still lives there. It's a domestic Australian delivery, so your gift never goes through customs, there's no form to fill in and no biosecurity check on it. Delivery is free on every box. For Christmas 2026, Standard delivery, order by 11:59pm Sydney time on these dates:

Delivering to Order by (11:59pm Sydney) Which is, in the UK
NSW, ACT, Vic, Qld, SA and Tas Tuesday 15 December 12:59pm, Tuesday 15 December
WA Monday 14 December 12:59pm, Monday 14 December
NT, and regional or remote addresses Thursday 10 December 12:59pm, Thursday 10 December

So the cut-off lands at lunchtime in the UK, not midnight. Set a reminder for the morning. Against the last published Royal Mail dates, that's eight days after the 2024 tracked date and twelve after International Standard.

After dispatch, delivery usually takes about 2 business days within Sydney, 3 to Melbourne or Brisbane, 4 to Adelaide, 5 to Perth or Hobart and 6 to Darwin. Regional and remote areas can take longer, and tracking is emailed to you. Express is available at checkout, but we don't put a Christmas date on it. Prices are shown in pounds as a guide; you pay in Australian dollars and your bank converts at checkout.

The last posting date is really a last queuing date. Skip the queue and Christmas gets another week.

Customs forms and declaring a gift

If you post it yourself, everything going to Australia needs a customs declaration, presents included. Royal Mail's rule is a CN22 for contents worth up to £270, and a CN23 in a clear SP 126 wallet above that. Buy postage online with Click & Drop and the label is generated for you.

The description matters more than people think. Australia's agriculture department says "gift", "present" or "goods" aren't acceptable descriptions: write what each item is and what it's made from, and list the packing materials too. On value, Australian Border Force says goods worth AUD1000 or less generally attract no duties, taxes or charges at the border, though tobacco and alcohol are taxed whatever the value.

Some festive things can't go at all. Royal Mail lists Christmas crackers, aerosols and perishable food among the items you can't post to Australia. Food is where most parcels come unstuck, so read our guide on what food you can send to Australia before you add the biscuits.

Packing for a long trip into summer

Your parcel goes from a British winter to an Australian summer, through two postal systems and a biosecurity check. Pack it like you mean it.

  • Use a strong box and bubble wrap, as Royal Mail recommends, and keep it under 2kg if you're using International Standard or Tracked.
  • Avoid egg cartons, wooden boxes, straw, dried plant material and any box that once held fruit, veg or meat. The agriculture department treats them as a biosecurity risk. Newspaper or foam is fine.
  • Write the contents list before you wrap anything. Filling in the form from memory at the counter is how "assorted gifts" ends up on it.
  • Think hard about chocolate. December is summer in Australia, and a parcel can sit on a sunny doorstep for an afternoon. Send the tracking number to them so someone can bring it in.
  • Put their phone number or email on the customs data. Royal Mail asks for it so the recipient can be contacted if anything's missing.

Missed the last posting date? What still works

December can run away with you. If the airmail window has closed, you've still got options that don't involve the Post Office at all.

An e-gift card for a shop or café they actually use, near where they live. It arrives in seconds, and you can send it on Christmas morning their time.

Or use local delivery in Australia. Order from an Australian business: a supermarket delivery for their Christmas lunch, a bakery near them, or a gift for your son or daughter in Australia packed in Sydney. Same Skies orders run to 15 December for most of the country.

A video call works best with a plan. Open presents together on screen, or cook the same pudding at both ends. More on timing below.

Or aim for New Year instead. Order after the Christmas dates and it simply lands later, once the visitors have gone home and the fridge is empty. Some people prefer it then.

Christmas Day across the time difference

Sydney is 11 hours ahead of the UK in December. New South Wales switched to daylight saving on 4 October and UK clocks go back on 25 October, so from then on the gap is 11 hours for Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart. Queensland, WA and the NT don't do daylight saving: Brisbane is 10 hours ahead, Darwin 9 and a half, and Perth 8. Adelaide is 10 and a half.

In Sydney In the UK In Perth
7am Christmas Day, presents 8pm Christmas Eve 4am Christmas Day
12pm Christmas Day, lunch 1am Christmas Day 9am Christmas Day
8pm Christmas Day, feet up 9am Christmas Day 5pm Christmas Day

The two calls that work best: Christmas Eve evening in the UK while they open presents, and Christmas morning in the UK while they wind down. Nobody has to set an alarm. If you can't make the call, put yourself in the box instead: with Same Skies, your words live behind a QR code on a premium card inside the box, with a message of up to 280 characters plus a photo or a video, and they open it with their phone camera.

Questions people ask

What is the last posting date to Australia for Christmas 2026?

Royal Mail hadn't published international Christmas dates for 2026 when we checked on 21 October, and it didn't publish any for 2025. Its last published Australia dates, for 2024, were Tuesday 3 December for International Standard and Saturday 7 December for tracked services with online postage, so posting by the end of November is the safe bet.

How long does post take from the UK to Australia?

Royal Mail's delivery aims are 5 to 7 working days for International Tracked, 6 to 7 for International Standard, and 15 to 80 working days for International Economy. Parcelforce quotes from 4 working days for globalexpress and 5 to 9 for globalpriority.

Can I post Christmas crackers to Australia?

No. Royal Mail lists Christmas crackers among the items you can't send to Australia, along with aerosols and perishable food. Buy crackers in Australia instead.

Do I need a customs form to send a Christmas present to Australia?

Yes. Royal Mail needs a CN22 for contents worth up to £270, or a CN23 above that. Describe each item and what it's made from, because Australia's agriculture department won't accept 'gift' or 'present' as a description.

What can I do if I've missed the last posting date?

Send an e-gift card for a shop near them, order from an Australian business that delivers locally, or plan a video call. A Same Skies box is packed in Sydney and can be ordered until 11:59pm Sydney time on Tuesday 15 December for most of Australia, which is 12:59pm UK time.

What time is it in Australia on Christmas Day?

In December, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart are 11 hours ahead of the UK, Brisbane 10, Adelaide 10 and a half, Darwin 9 and a half, and Perth 8. Christmas lunch at noon in Sydney is 1am in the UK.

Missed the post? There's still time.

Pick a box, add your message, photo or video, and we'll pack it in Sydney. Order by 15 December for most of Australia.
