The short answer

Postage to Australia From the UK

Postage to Australia from the UK costs from £3.60 for a letter up to 100g, £12.35 for a 250g parcel and £25.10 for 2kg with Royal Mail International Tracked bought online (prices checked 25 October 2026). Parcels over 2kg go by Tracked Heavier, from £38.85 at 3kg up to £170.00 at 20kg. Royal Mail aims for 5 to 7 working days on its tracked services and 6 to 7 for a letter. Every parcel needs a customs declaration listing each item, never just "gift", and food, seeds, wood and plant material face Australian biosecurity checks.

The Same Skies card with its QR code

We read these prices and delivery aims on royalmail.com and parcelforce.com in late October 2026, and date each table, so check them again before you post. And if the whole palaver starts to feel like a lot for one present, there's an honest alternative: send a gift to Australia from the UK that's packed in Sydney instead. More on that at the end.

How long does post take to Australia from the UK?

It depends on the service: 5 to 7 working days on Royal Mail's tracked services, 6 to 7 on International Standard, up to 12 weeks on Economy, and from 4 working days with Parcelforce. Those are aims, not promises, and a biosecurity inspection can add time.

Service Delivery aim to Australia Weight limit Tracking and cover
Royal Mail International Standard 6 to 7 working days 2kg Not tracked, compensation up to £20
Royal Mail International Tracked 5 to 7 working days 2kg Tracked to the delivery point, compensation up to £50
Royal Mail International Tracked & Signed 5 to 7 working days 750g A documents service, per Royal Mail's Australia guide
Royal Mail International Tracked Heavier 5 to 7 working days 20kg Tracked, compensation up to £50
Royal Mail International Economy Up to 12 weeks 2kg Not tracked, compensation up to £20
Parcelforce globalpriority 5 to 9 working days, by area Check when you quote Tracked, compensation of £100
Parcelforce globalexpress From 4 working days Check when you quote Tracked, compensation of £200

Which service to use for a present

International Tracked, nine times out of ten. It's built for goods and gifts, tracked to the door, and oddly cheaper than Standard online for Australia once you're past 250g (the prices are below). Tracked & Signed sounds like the safe choice for something precious, but Royal Mail's Australia country guide describes it as a document service only, so it's the wrong tool for a box of presents.

Economy is cheap and slow: up to 12 weeks, which is no use for a birthday. Over 2kg, you're choosing between Tracked Heavier and Parcelforce Worldwide, where globalpriority is the middle option and globalexpress the quick, dearer one.

Courier comparison sites

Parcel2Go, ParcelHero and Parcel Monkey resell services from couriers and Parcelforce, usually with a local drop-off shop and the customs paperwork built into booking. Quotes swing with weight, size and courier, so compare a few with your exact measurements. The customs and biosecurity rules below apply whichever van it leaves in.

Sending a card to Australia

A card in an envelope counts as a Letter, up to 100g. International Standard costs £3.60 and aims for 6 to 7 working days. Economy is 10p cheaper and can take up to 12 weeks, which is no saving at all if your birthday card lands after the birthday.

UK to Australia postage costs: what a parcel costs

Australia sits in Royal Mail's World Zone 2. These are the published small parcel prices on 21 October 2026. Online means buying postage at royalmail.com through Click & Drop; the Post Office counter costs more.

Weight up to Standard, online Standard, Post Office Tracked, online Tracked, Post Office
250g £10.80 £16.60 £12.35 £17.55
500g £17.75 £22.85 £15.85 £22.90
1kg £26.20 £29.45 £19.40 £29.50
2kg £36.45 £37.60 £25.10 £37.60

Two things jump out. Online is cheaper than the counter, and from 500g up Tracked is cheaper online than Standard, so there's no reason to send a proper parcel untracked. A 1kg box of presents costs £19.40 tracked online, against £29.45 for untracked Standard over the counter.

Heavier than 2kg? International Tracked Heavier starts from £27.50 online and takes up to 20kg. Parcelforce lists globalpriority from £28.80 and globalexpress from £53.20, but those are starting prices across every destination, so get a quote for Australia. Size matters too: a Royal Mail small parcel can be no longer than 60cm, with length, width and depth adding up to under 90cm.

Postage to Australia by weight, from 750g to 20kg

The table above stops at 2kg. Here is the whole range Royal Mail sells for a parcel to Australia, with the tracked service that fits each weight. International Tracked covers up to 2kg and International Tracked Heavier takes over from there, up to 20kg. Prices were read on royalmail.com on 25 October 2026, and Royal Mail's delivery aim for both services is 5 to 7 working days.

Weight up to Service Online At a Post Office Delivery aim
750g International Tracked £18.40 £26.10 5 to 7 working days
1kg International Tracked £19.40 £29.50 5 to 7 working days
1.25kg International Tracked £25.10 £32.95 5 to 7 working days
1.5kg International Tracked £25.10 £35.65 5 to 7 working days
2kg International Tracked £25.10 £37.60 5 to 7 working days
3kg International Tracked Heavier £38.85 £57.00 5 to 7 working days
4kg International Tracked Heavier £45.50 £63.10 5 to 7 working days
5kg International Tracked Heavier £49.50 £69.80 5 to 7 working days
7.5kg International Tracked Heavier £63.95 £93.20 5 to 7 working days
10kg International Tracked Heavier £80.30 £127.40 5 to 7 working days
15kg International Tracked Heavier £123.40 £178.60 5 to 7 working days
20kg International Tracked Heavier £170.00 £228.20 5 to 7 working days

What the weight table tells you

  • Anything over 1kg and up to 2kg costs £25.10 online on International Tracked, so a 1.1kg parcel costs the same as a 2kg one. Fill the box.
  • Don't use Tracked Heavier for a 2kg parcel. It costs £35.10 online at 2kg against £25.10 on International Tracked. Heavier starts to make sense above 2kg.
  • The heavier the parcel, the more the counter costs you. At 20kg the Post Office price is £58.20 above the online price, and at 5kg it is £20.30 above.
  • Royal Mail's service page says Tracked Heavier is sold online, with collection or drop-off at a Post Office, and that it takes parcels up to 61cm by 46cm by 46cm. It includes compensation of up to £50, and extra cover up to £250 costs £3.10 more.
  • Parcels over 20kg, or ones that must arrive quickly, are a Parcelforce job. See the other carriers below.

Letters and cards to Australia

A letter to Australia is £3.60 with Royal Mail International Standard, whether you buy postage online or at a Post Office (prices checked 25 October 2026). A letter can weigh up to 100g and measure up to 24cm by 16.5cm and 0.5cm deep, which takes a greetings card, a postcard or a handwritten letter. Royal Mail aims to deliver Standard in 6 to 7 working days, but it is untracked, so you will not see it arrive.

A thick card, or one with something flat tucked in, is a large letter. That goes up to 750g and 35.3cm by 25cm by 2.5cm, and costs a good deal more:

Size and weight International Standard, online International Standard, Post Office International Tracked, online International Tracked, Post Office
Letter, up to 100g £3.60 £3.60 Not offered Not offered
Large letter, up to 100g £4.50 £4.60 £11.30 £11.95
Large letter, up to 250g £8.75 £9.55 £13.25 £14.90
Large letter, up to 500g £13.05 £13.90 £15.65 £16.55
Large letter, up to 750g £16.40 £19.55 £19.95 £19.60

There is no tracked letter for a card. International Tracked starts at large letter size, and Tracked & Signed, which has a £8.60 letter, is a documents service. At 750g the counter price for a tracked large letter is 35p below the online one, which is the only band where that happens. If something flat is near 750g, compare it with a small parcel too. International Tracked small parcel was £18.40 online at 750g.

Do a card or letter need a customs form?

A card that is only personal correspondence does not. Royal Mail's customs guidance says items containing personal correspondence, such as letters and postcards, do not need a CN23. Put a present in the envelope and it is goods. A customs declaration applies, and Australia's biosecurity rules apply to whatever is inside, so describe each item and what it is made from, and skip anything on the biosecurity list further down. The Australia guide gives the form for goods as a CN22 for items worth up to £270 and a CN23 above that.

Posting a birthday card or Christmas card

If you want to send a birthday card to Australia, remember the aim is 6 to 7 working days with no tracking and no promise. We would post it at least a fortnight ahead. For Christmas, our guide to Christmas cards to Australia from the UK has the dates and the last safe week for the postbox.

What it costs from other carriers

Royal Mail is not the only way to post a parcel, and for small parcels it is not always the cheapest. Evri's UK to Australia page, read on 25 October 2026, lists its own prices next to Royal Mail International Tracked. The Royal Mail column matches Royal Mail's own page today, so we have used both.

Weight up to Evri Royal Mail International Tracked, online
250g £10.59 £12.35
500g £10.59 £15.85
1kg £15.69 £19.40
2kg £22.59 £25.10
  • Evri takes parcels up to 15kg, includes tracking and £20 of cover (raised to £999 if you pay for it), and aims for 7 to 13 days. Its International Priority upgrade aims for 5 to 10 days, and the page does not give a price for it. Royal Mail International Tracked includes compensation up to £50 and aims for 5 to 7 working days.
  • Parcel2Go says shipping to Australia starts at £11.10. It names Royal Mail, DPD and TNT Express, gives no weight or date for that figure, and has no price table, so treat it as a starting point and get a quote.
  • Parcelforce lists globalpriority from £28.80 and globalexpress from £53.20. Those are starting prices across destinations, not Australia prices. Its Australia page gives 5 to 9 working days for globalpriority, depending on the postcode area, and from 4 days for globalexpress, with a 20kg limit on globalpriority and 30kg on globalexpress.

Courier and comparison quotes change with weight, size and day, so enter your exact parcel. A few pounds saved on postage is no gain if it adds a week, and every one of these routes goes through the same customs and biosecurity checks. Sources: Evri, Parcel2Go and Parcelforce.

Customs: the form, and how to describe a gift

Every parcel to Australia needs a customs declaration and electronic customs data. Royal Mail's Australia guide says a CN22 covers items worth up to £270, and a CN23 (in a clear SP 126 wallet from the Post Office) covers anything above that. The easy way is Royal Mail's online customs form: buy postage through Click & Drop and it creates the customs label and sends the data ahead of your parcel.

Describe every item, properly

Australia's Department of Agriculture is blunt about this: 'gift', 'present' or 'goods' are not acceptable descriptions. List each thing, what it's made of, and the packing material too. So not "gift, £40" but "milk chocolate bar, commercially packaged, 2; cotton scarf, 1; paperback book, 1; packed in newspaper". Write it in English, give honest values, and add the recipient's phone number or email, which Royal Mail asks for.

Will they pay duty or GST on a gift?

Usually not. Australian Border Force says goods worth AUD 1,000 or less generally have no duties, taxes or charges to pay at the border. Above that, an Import Declaration and duties apply. Tobacco and alcohol attract duty whatever they're worth. And there's no special allowance for presents: the old gift concession was revoked in 2008, so a gift is treated like any other parcel of goods.

Biosecurity: what Australia won't let in

Parcels arriving in Australia are assessed by X-ray, detector dogs or a hand search, and the rules name family and friends sending gifts specifically. Anything that doesn't meet import conditions is destroyed or sent back to you. If it needs treatment instead, that costs A$94 per item at the importer's expense, which for a gift parcel means the person you're trying to cheer up. How the usual suspects fare, per the department's bringing or mailing goods guidance:

  • Shop-bought chocolate is allowed if it's commercially prepared and packaged and has no meat in it. Other sweets have to meet the conditions for each ingredient.
  • Biscuits, cakes, Christmas cake and Christmas pudding can go if they're fully cooked, shelf stable and meat-free.
  • Plain black or green tea is fine in clean, unopened packaging, which covers the box of teabags they keep asking for.
  • Dairy comes with strict conditions and an inspection. Fresh fruit and chilled or frozen food can't go in the post at all under Royal Mail's rules.
  • Seeds need to be a permitted species with a phytosanitary certificate. In practice, leave the garden centre packets at home.
  • Wooden items are allowed only if they're free of bark and insect damage, and they must be declared and inspected, so a wooden toy or chopping board means a closer look.
  • Live plants need an import permit, and used walking boots or camping kit must be clean and free of soil, seeds and plant material.

For anything else, search BICON, the department's import conditions database, and check again each time, because conditions change. Our guide to sending food gifts to Australia from the UK goes through the treats Brits most often post.

Packing and addressing it for the long haul

Pack it as if it's going to be stacked, dropped and X-rayed, because it is. Use a new, sturdy box: the department says no egg cartons, wooden boxes, boxes that once held fruit, vegetables or meat, or straw, because insects hide in them. Newspaper, foam or bubble wrap is fine. December is summer in Australia, so think twice before posting anything that melts.

How to write an Australian address

Per Royal Mail: suburb, state abbreviation and four-digit postcode on one line in capitals, AUSTRALIA on the last line, and a flat number before the building number with a slash.

Ms Jo Bloggs
4/22 Example Street
NEWTOWN NSW 2042
AUSTRALIA

The state and territory abbreviations are NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, WA, TAS, NT and ACT. Ask them for the exact postcode rather than looking up the suburb yourself.

Tracking it to the door

International Tracked is tracked to the delivery point. Once the parcel clears the border checks, it's released to Australia Post for the final leg, so the last scans are theirs. Send them the tracking number: if anything on the declaration needs checking, they're the one who'll be asked.

Posting for Christmas

Royal Mail's advice for December is to send international items as early as you can. We've rounded up the dates in our guide to Christmas posting dates to Australia from the UK. Our rule of thumb: Tracked, posted early, with nothing that melts. Economy at Christmas is a gamble.

The honest alternative: buy from something already in Australia

Posting it yourself has a lot going for it. You choose every item, you can send the exact biscuits from your high street, and wrapping it is half the fun. But if the form, the biosecurity list and the weight bands feel like a lot for one present, buy from a business that's already in Australia, such as these gift hampers delivered in Australia. The gift is packed and delivered there, so it never goes through customs.

That's what we do at Same Skies. Lewis grew up in the UK and moved to Sydney (his mum, Samantha, is still in the UK), and he and Jess pack every box by hand in Sydney. You order from the UK, we send it with Australia Post, and it's a domestic Australian delivery: usually 2 to 5 business days after dispatch to most addresses, longer for regional and remote areas, with free delivery on every box. Prices are shown in pounds as a guide; you pay in Australian dollars and your bank converts at checkout. See how it works.

Questions people ask

How long does post take to Australia from the UK?

Royal Mail International Tracked aims for 5 to 7 working days, International Standard 6 to 7, and International Economy up to 12 weeks. Parcelforce globalexpress is from 4 working days and globalpriority 5 to 9, depending on the area. A biosecurity inspection can add time.

Do I need a customs form to send a gift to Australia?

Yes. Royal Mail says a CN22 covers items worth up to £270 and a CN23 covers anything above that, and Click & Drop creates the label for you. List every item and what it's made of, because 'gift' on its own isn't accepted.

Will the person in Australia have to pay duty on a gift?

Generally not if it's worth AUD 1,000 or less, according to Australian Border Force. Tobacco and alcohol attract duty at any value, and there's no extra allowance for gifts.

What items can't be sent to Australia from the UK?

Fresh fruit and chilled or frozen food can't go in the post under Royal Mail's rules, Christmas crackers can't be posted at all, and live plants and uncanned meat need an Australian import permit. Dairy, seeds and wooden items come with strict conditions and an inspection, so check BICON before you pack anything unusual.

What happens if biosecurity stops my parcel?

Items that don't meet import conditions are destroyed or sent back to the sender. Some can be treated instead, at A$94 per item, paid by the importer, which for a gift means the person receiving it.

How much does it cost to send a letter or card to Australia from the UK?

Royal Mail International Standard charges £3.60 for a letter up to 100g, online or at a Post Office, with a delivery aim of 6 to 7 working days (checked 25 October 2026). A large letter up to 750g is from £4.50 online, and there is no tracked letter service for cards.

How much does it cost to post a parcel to Australia by weight?

On 25 October 2026 Royal Mail International Tracked was £12.35 online for 250g, £19.40 for 1kg and £25.10 for 2kg. International Tracked Heavier was £38.85 for 3kg, £49.50 for 5kg, £80.30 for 10kg and £170.00 for 20kg. Post Office counter prices are higher.
