Defence Posting Gifts: Sending Love to a New Base

Posting gift ideas for a partner, son, daughter or mate posted interstate, plus the partner running the move: what to send, when, and where.

The short answer

Defence Posting Gifts

The best Defence posting gifts get used up or go straight on the wall: good coffee, snacks, a candle, a print, a notebook for the posting to-do list. Send it to the new address once they've moved in, after the removalists, and ask them which address takes parcels before you order. That's most of it. The rest is timing, and remembering the person running the move.

If you love someone in Defence, you know the rhythm. The posting comes through, and within weeks the house is a maze of half-taped boxes, someone's packed the kettle and the kids have opinions about all of it. A gift won't carry a single box. Timed right, it makes a new city feel like theirs a lot sooner.

This guide is for anyone sending to a partner, son, daughter or mate posted to another city inside Australia. We only deliver within Australia, so it doesn't cover overseas deployments.

Posting gifts that won't need packing next time

After a move, nobody wants more stuff. Every object has just been wrapped, carried, unwrapped and found a cupboard, and they know the next posting will mean doing it all again. So be ruthless.

  • Things that get used up: coffee, snacks, a candle, a bath soak. Gone before the next posting cycle comes round.
  • Things that make a rental or a Defence house feel like home: a print for the bare wall, a candle to cover the smell of packing tape.
  • A notebook for the lists. School enrolments, the new GP, which night the bins go out.
  • Skip anything big, fragile, flat-packed or that's just another mug to wrap next time.

Some of the best posting gifts aren't things at all. A food delivery voucher for the first week, when the pots are still in a box marked "kitchen misc". A booking for something to do in the new city. A photo book of the old street, small enough to live in a drawer.

If you'd rather send a box, The New Beginning Box fits a fresh start like this almost exactly. It has a Canvas-Bound A5 Notebook in the colour you choose, a Café Latte Candle, an A3 Matte Art Print (unframed), Marc de Champagne Truffles, a Pour-Over Coffee Duo and Australian Macadamias, lightly roasted and lightly salted. Almost everything in it gets used up or goes on the wall. The one trade-off: the print is A3 and unframed, so pair it with a frame if you know their walls are bare.

When to send it: timing around the move

Timing is where posting gifts go wrong. Send too early and it lands in the middle of the pack-up. Too late is rarely a problem.

Where they're at Send a parcel? What helps
The posting's just come through Hold off A phone call. If you're local, offer to mind the kids or the dog on pack-up day
Pack-up week No Anything that arrives now risks being boxed and found at the other end. Drop off dinner instead
Temporary accommodation Only if they ask Something small and light, or a food delivery voucher by text
First week in the new place Yes Coffee, snacks, something for the wall, a treat for the first night
A month or so in Yes, and it's underrated The "how's it really going" box, once the boxes are flat and the novelty's worn off

If you're unsure, ask. "When's the truck coming, and when are you in?" is a perfectly normal question, and the answer tells you everything.

Where to send a gift for a Defence posting

Ask them which address takes parcels. We can't tell you how mail works at any particular base, and they'll know what suits their situation better than any guide. For most people the answer is the new home address, a Parcel Locker or a PO Box, and our boxes go to all three, except for wine.

Before you hit order, check you've got:

  • their full name, as it'll appear on the letterbox or locker account
  • the unit or house number, because new estates and townhouse blocks are easy to get wrong
  • the suburb and postcode, both of them, since some street names turn up in three suburbs
  • a plan if they're still in temporary digs: wait, or ask how long they'll be there

Wine is the exception to the locker rule. Some boxes can add a Poco Vino Piccolo (Sauvignon Blanc or Shiraz) for a housewarming toast, but someone 18 or over has to sign for it, so it needs a street address. Wine can't be delivered to the NT, so skip it for a Darwin posting.

Gifts for the one who's been posted

A partner who's gone ahead

Sometimes the member goes first and the family follows once school terms or leases line up. That stretch can feel like a long-distance relationship with a removalist truck attached. A box works as a stand-in for you: the print you picked, the lollies you always split, a message about the plan for when you're under the same roof. Our gifts for long-distance couples are built around exactly that gap.

A son or daughter

They'll tell you the new place is "fine" and that they're living on the mess or toast. Send practical comfort that doesn't need a kitchen: good coffee, proper snacks, something soft. If they've got weekends free to explore a new city, the Traveller Box has a Cabana Beach Towel, a Hardcover Travel Journal, a Hardwood Pen & Bamboo Case, Honeycomb Chocolate Thins, a Passport Wallet & Tag Set and a Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask, with colours chosen on the product page.

A mate

Low-key and funny. Something to eat on the couch, a daft desk companion, a message about the farewell night they'd rather forget. Nothing fragile, nothing that needs a shelf.

Don't forget the partner running the move

The posting has one name on it. The move usually runs on someone else. The partner juggling removalist dates, the pet transport, school records, a new lease and the kids' feelings about leaving their friends rarely gets the farewell drinks. They might also be leaving a job and starting the hunt for a new one, again.

That person often deserves the gift more. Aim it squarely at them, with nothing for the household and nothing that adds to the list. A night off, a candle they choose, chocolate they don't have to share. You can build your own box around them, six gifts in the Twilight Box or eight in the Midnight Box, so you can leave out anything that would end up in the kids' lunchboxes.

And if you're nearby, the most useful gift costs nothing: take the kids for a day during pack-up.

Helping the kids settle in

Kids feel a posting differently. New school, new room, friends left behind. You can't fix that from another state, but grandparents, aunties and godparents can make the first night a bit softer.

  • A first-night bag they open in the new room: a favourite snack, a torch, a book, their own pillowcase, packed in the car rather than on the truck.
  • A short video from Nan, the cousins or the old next-door neighbour, saved for when they're homesick.
  • Something for the new bedroom wall, so it looks like theirs before everything's unpacked.
  • Postcards with a stamp already on and your address already written, so writing back takes thirty seconds.

Delivery times, and what to write

We pack every box ourselves in Sydney, Monday to Friday, and send it with Australia Post. After dispatch it usually takes about 2 business days within Sydney, 3 to Melbourne or Brisbane, 4 to Adelaide, 5 to Perth or Hobart and 6 to Darwin. Regional and remote addresses can take longer, so if the posting is a regional city like Townsville or Wagga Wagga, allow a few extra days. Australia Post doesn't promise delivery days. Express is available at checkout for $15, though we can't put a date on it. If the move lands close to Christmas, check our Christmas order-by dates before you leave it late.

Your words live behind a QR code on a premium card inside the box. You add a free message of up to 280 characters, plus a photo or a video if you like. They point their phone camera at the code and it opens on their screen, and photos and videos replay for around six months. A video of the old street, the dog or the cousins yelling hello can be watched again on any night it's needed. Delivery is free on every box, no price goes inside, and the receipt and tracking come to you.

The best posting gift is the one box in the new house that nobody has to unpack into a cupboard.

A few to borrow:

  • To a partner who's gone ahead: "New posting, same us. Put the print up before you unpack anything else, so one wall looks like home."
  • To a son or daughter: "Proud of you. The notebook's for all the names you'll need to remember. The coffee's for the mornings after you forget them."
  • To the partner running the move: "You did the truck, the cat, the school and the lease. Tonight nobody needs anything from you."
  • To a mate: "Heard the new place has a spare room. Consider this my deposit."

Questions people ask

What is a good gift for someone who's just been posted?

Things that get used up or make the new place feel like home: coffee, snacks, a candle, a print for the wall or a notebook for the to-do list. Skip anything bulky, fragile or that needs assembling, because it'll have to be packed again next posting.

When should I send a gift for a Defence posting?

Wait until they've moved in and confirmed the new address. A parcel that arrives during the pack-up can end up on the removalist's truck, while one sent a few weeks after they arrive often lands when it's needed most.

Can I send a parcel to a military base?

We can't advise on how mail works at any particular base, so ask the person you're sending to which address takes parcels. A home address, Parcel Locker or PO Box all work for our boxes, except boxes with wine.

What can I give the partner managing a Defence move?

Something just for them, like a night in, chocolate they don't have to share or a candle they choose, rather than anything for the household. If you live nearby, minding the kids on pack-up day is a gift in itself.

Do you deliver to Defence members overseas?

No. Same Skies only delivers within Australia, so our boxes suit postings to a new city at home.

How long does delivery take to Darwin or Townsville?

After dispatch, Australia Post usually takes about 6 business days to Darwin. Regional cities can take longer, and Australia Post doesn't promise delivery days, so allow a buffer.
