The short answer

How to Send a Birthday Gift Interstate (On Time)

To get a birthday gift interstate on time, count back from the birthday in business days (Monday to Friday). For a gift box packed and posted from Sydney, order at least 5 business days ahead for Sydney, 6 for Melbourne or Brisbane, 7 for Adelaide, 8 for Perth or Hobart and 9 for Darwin, then add a day for every public holiday in the way.

That's the whole trick, really. The rest of this page is where those numbers come from, the weekend and long-weekend traps, the address details that send parcels on a detour, what to do when you've left it too late, and how to make a box that lands on a Wednesday still feel like it belongs to Friday.

How long does a parcel take to get interstate?

Australia Post lists Parcel Post as 3-6 business days interstate, counted from the day after posting. It's an estimate, not a promise, and the real time depends on where it's going and how busy the network is.

From Sydney, where we pack, it usually takes 2 business days within Sydney, 3 to Melbourne or Brisbane, 4 to Adelaide, 5 to Perth or Hobart and 6 to Darwin. Add packing time on the front and one spare day on the back, and you get this:

Their city Australia Post business days after dispatch (from Sydney) Order a Same Skies box at least this many business days ahead
Sydney 2 5
Melbourne 3 6
Brisbane 3 6
Adelaide 4 7
Perth 5 8
Hobart 5 8
Darwin 6 9
Regional and remote Can take longer Add a few extra days

The last column is 2 business days for packing, plus transit, plus 1 buffer day. Sending something else? The same sum works for any shop: their dispatch time, plus Australia Post's transit to the city, plus a day of slack.

Count back from the birthday

Most people pick the gift and then think about delivery. Flip it. Start with the day you want it on their bench and work backwards.

  1. Pick a target a day or two before the birthday. A gift that waits on a shelf is fine. A gift that's still on a truck isn't.
  2. Find their city in the table and count back that many business days from the target.
  3. Skip Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays as you count.
  4. If you're ordering at night or on a weekend, start the count from the next business day.

A worked example

Your brother in Perth has a birthday on a Friday. Perth needs 8 business days. Count back from that Friday: Thursday, Wednesday, Tuesday and Monday make four, then the Friday, Thursday, Wednesday and Tuesday before make eight. So you order by the Tuesday of the week before, ten calendar days out. If that feels early, good. That's the buffer doing its job.

Weekends, public holidays and the Monday birthday trap

This is where most interstate birthday gifts go late. Business days skip weekends, so a birthday on a Monday really means the parcel has to arrive by the Friday before. Target the Friday.

Public holidays catch people twice, because there are national ones and state ones. A holiday in NSW, where the parcel starts, and a holiday in their state, where it ends, both push things back. If a long weekend sits anywhere in your countdown, add a day for each holiday and check their state's list as well as yours.

December birthdays get the Christmas rush on top. Our Christmas order-by dates for Standard (free) delivery are 11:59pm Sydney time on Tuesday 15 December for NSW, ACT, Vic, Qld, SA and Tas, Monday 14 December for WA, and Thursday 10 December for the NT and regional or remote addresses. The full table lives on our Christmas gift boxes page.

Cutting it fine any time of year? Express is $15 at checkout. Australia Post still doesn't set a delivery day for it, so keep the buffer day in your count.

Get the address right

A perfect countdown is wasted if the parcel goes to the wrong door. Run through this before you pay:

  • Full name. The one on their letterbox or ID, so a signature or a post office pickup goes smoothly.
  • Unit number. The easiest detail to forget. Ask them, or someone who'd know.
  • Street, suburb, state and postcode, spelled the way Australia Post spells them.
  • PO Boxes and Parcel Lockers are fine, and handy for people who are never home. The exception is wine: a Poco Vino Piccolo add-on needs someone 18+ to sign at a street address, and wine can't be delivered to the NT.
  • A work address only works if their workplace accepts personal parcels. Check first.
  • Mine sites and camps. Fine if the site takes parcels. Add their full name, the site or camp name and their room or block. Many camps don't allow candles or alcohol, so pick a box without them, or send it home for their days off.

Running late? Last-minute ideas that still land

If the countdown says you've already missed it, don't panic-buy something rubbish. You've got options.

  • A digital gift card, sent first thing on the birthday morning. Pick a shop or café they actually use.
  • A local florist in their city. Many do same-day delivery, but check the cut-off, which is often in the recipient's local time. That catches people out with Perth.
  • A food delivery voucher for a birthday lunch, so you're shouting even if you can't be there.
  • A call booked for the evening, in their time zone, with the whole family on the line.

Then send the proper gift anyway and call it birthday week. Say so in the message, so it reads as planned rather than forgotten.

If a parcel you sent on time is running behind, Australia Post says most late parcels arrive within 5 business days of their expected date, and you can lodge an enquiry once it's 10 business days past. You'll need a MyPost account and the tracking number. For our boxes, tracking is emailed to you, the sender.

Make it land on the day

Even when a parcel arrives early, you can make the moment belong to the birthday. Text them when it lands: "Not until Friday. I mean it." Most people will last until Thursday.

Then plan how you'll be in the room. A video-call unboxing is the obvious one, so book it in their time. Perth is 2 hours behind Sydney, and 3 hours behind during eastern daylight saving from October to April. Queensland has no daylight saving. Get it wrong and your 7pm toast is their 4pm meeting.

Can't line up a call? Put yourself inside the gift. With a Same Skies box, your words live behind a QR code on a premium card inside the box. Add a message of up to 280 characters for free, plus a photo or a video. They point their phone camera at the code and it opens on their screen, so the whole family singing a wildly off-key happy birthday can be waiting in there. Photos and videos replay for around six months, which means they get to cringe at your harmonies more than once.

Early is what on time looks like from the other side of the country.

Questions people ask

How many days before a birthday should I send a gift interstate?

Count back in business days: packing time, plus Australia Post transit to their city, plus a buffer day. For a Same Skies box that's at least 5 business days for Sydney, 6 for Melbourne or Brisbane, 7 for Adelaide, 8 for Perth or Hobart and 9 for Darwin, with extra for regional and remote addresses.

How long does Australia Post take to deliver interstate?

Australia Post lists Parcel Post as 3-6 business days interstate, counted from the day after posting. From Sydney it usually takes 3 business days to Melbourne or Brisbane, 4 to Adelaide, 5 to Perth or Hobart and 6 to Darwin, and it's an estimate rather than a promise.

Do weekends and public holidays count as delivery days?

No. Count Monday to Friday only, and add a day for each public holiday in the sending state or the recipient's state.

What can I send interstate for a birthday at the last minute?

A digital gift card sent on the morning, flowers from a local florist in their city or a food delivery voucher for lunch will all land on the day. Send the proper gift as well and call it birthday week.

What should I do if a birthday parcel is late?

Check the tracking first. Australia Post says most late parcels arrive within 5 business days of their expected date, and you can lodge an enquiry with a MyPost account and the tracking number once a domestic parcel is 10 business days late.

Is Express worth it for a birthday gift?

Express is $15 at checkout on a Same Skies box. Australia Post doesn't set a delivery day for it, so still count back with a buffer day.
