The short answer

When Is Father's Day in Australia? (2027 Date + Sending Love From the UK)

Father's Day in Australia is on Sunday 5 September 2027, the first Sunday in September. The UK's Father's Day is Sunday 20 June 2027, eleven weeks earlier, so if your dad lives in Australia, June is the wrong month and September is the one to circle.

Here are both dates, why they don't match, the pub lunch problem, what to do about a dad who won't do video calls, the best time to ring, gift ideas that never touch a Post Office counter, and when to order so something arrives before the Sunday. The easy option is to send a gift to Australia from the UK that's packed in Sydney, so it never goes through customs.

Father's Day dates: UK vs Australia

Year UK Father's Day Australian Father's Day
2027 Sunday 20 June Sunday 5 September
2028 Sunday 18 June Sunday 3 September

Dates from timeanddate.com and publicholidays.com.au. It isn't a public holiday in either country, so it's a normal Sunday with better breakfast.

Why is Father's Day different in Australia?

The UK keeps Father's Day on the third Sunday in June, same as the US and Canada. Australia went for the first Sunday in September, which roughly lines up with the start of spring there. So while UK dads get theirs in early summer, Aussie dads get theirs as the weather warms up and the barbecue comes out of the shed.

You'll find a few origin stories for the September date online. None of them come with a source we'd trust, so we'll leave it at that. What matters is that the gap is a steady eleven weeks, and it's long enough for a UK reminder to feel "done" by the time September comes.

Who celebrates which?

The dad gets the day of the country he lives in. If he's in Perth, it's September, however loudly the UK high street shouts about June.

It gets interesting when a family is spread out. A UK dad with a son in Brisbane gets his day in June, and his son will need reminding, because nothing in Australia is advertising Father's Day in June. A son or daughter who has become a dad in Australia celebrates in September with his own kids, which gives a UK grandad the job of sending something across for him. And a British dad who moved out years ago? Some families give him both. He won't complain.

Put 5 September 2027 in your phone now, with a reminder in mid August. That's what catches it.

For dads who don't do video calls

Plenty of dads would rather do anything than sit in front of a camera saying "can you hear me?" to the ceiling. If that's yours, stop forcing the FaceTime and play to his strengths.

  • Voice notes. A two minute one he can play in the car is often easier for him than a live call, and he can reply when he's ready.
  • A photo with a story. His old local, the dog, the football ground, the car he sold you. Send it with one line, not an essay.
  • A shared fixture. If you both follow the same team, message through the match instead of calling. A Saturday 3pm kick-off in the UK is midnight in Sydney in September, so he'll probably be watching the highlights over breakfast, and your texts will be waiting for him.
  • A message he can watch on his own. Some dads go quiet on a call but will watch a video five times when nobody's looking.

Most dads don't need a long call. They need proof you were thinking about them.

The pub lunch problem

In the UK, a lot of Father's Days end up as a pub lunch: a roast, a pint, someone's cousin late. Doing that across the world is awkward, because Sunday lunch in Sydney is the small hours in the UK. There are ways round it.

If he's in Australia, book the table for him. Ring his local, pay ahead if they'll let you, and tell him to turn up at one. Then call from your Sunday morning in the UK, by which point he's home, fed and happy to chat. If you're a UK dad and your kids are in Australia, flip it: your 1pm roast on 20 June is 10pm in Sydney, so they can join the table on a phone propped against the gravy boat before bed.

What time to call on Father's Day

On 5 September 2027 the UK is on British Summer Time and Sydney hasn't started daylight saving yet (that's 3 October 2027), so Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart and Brisbane are 9 hours ahead of the UK, Adelaide and Darwin 8.5, and Perth 7. It's the same gap on the UK's 20 June.

Gift ideas for a dad in Australia

Posting from the UK works if you leave time. Royal Mail's Australia country guide gives International Tracked a delivery aim of 5 to 7 working days, and our guide to sending a parcel to Australia from the UK covers the rest. If you were planning to post his favourite biscuits, check which food you can send to Australia first.

Buying inside Australia is usually less faff:

  • A voucher for his local hardware shop or golf club, bought online and emailed to him.
  • That pub lunch, booked and paid for.
  • A framed photo of somewhere from home, made up by a framing shop near him.
  • A box packed in Australia and delivered to his door.

Which Same Skies box suits him?

Lewis and Jess pack every box by hand in Sydney. You order from the UK and Australia Post delivers it, so it's a domestic Australian delivery and your gift never goes through customs. Prices are shown in pounds as a guide; you pay in Australian dollars and your bank converts at checkout.

The Gift Box for Him from Same Skies, a Father's Day gift delivered in Australia
The Gift Box for Him: salt, shortbread, coffee and no candle in sight.

The Gift Box for Him is the obvious one: Jalapeño & Lime Salt, Australian Shortbread, Honey-Glazed Popcorn (made in Australia), a Pour-Over Coffee Duo, a Crochet Comfort Companion and an A3 Matte Art Print. There's no candle, which is either a relief or a missed opportunity depending on your dad. The print is A3 and unframed, so it suits a dad with a garage wall or a shed that needs cheering up.

If he's always off somewhere, The Traveller is better: a Hardcover Travel Journal, Cabana Beach Towel, Hardwood Pen & Bamboo Case, Honeycomb Chocolate Thins, a Passport Wallet & Tag Set and a Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask. Good for the dad who visits you every other year and moans about the flight.

And if he's just moved, retired or started something new, The New Beginning Box has a Canvas-Bound A5 Notebook, Café Latte Candle, Marc de Champagne Truffles, a Pour-Over Coffee Duo, Australian Macadamias and the A3 print. Or build your own box around the things he actually likes.

Every box has a premium card with a QR code. Your words live behind it: a message, a photo or a video, which he opens by pointing his phone camera at the code. It's ideal for the dad who doesn't do calls, because he can watch it alone, as many times as he likes, for around six months.
