Celebrations
Australia's Mother's Day is Sunday 9 May 2027. Both countries' dates, why they differ, when to ring, and gifts for a mum in Australia.
The short answer
Mother's Day in Australia is on Sunday 9 May 2027, the second Sunday in May. That's nine weeks after the UK's Mothering Sunday on Sunday 7 March 2027, so if your family is split between the two countries, you've got two Mother's Days to remember.

Below you'll find both dates side by side, why they're different, who celebrates which one, the best time to ring on the day (Sydney is nine hours ahead of the UK in May), gift ideas that don't involve queuing at the Post Office, and how far ahead to order if you want something on her doorstep before the Sunday. If you'd rather skip the Post Office altogether, you can send a gift to Australia from the UK that's packed by hand in Sydney and delivered free.
| Year | UK Mothering Sunday | Australian Mother's Day |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 | Sunday 7 March | Sunday 9 May |
| 2028 | Sunday 26 March | Sunday 14 May |
Dates from timeanddate.com and publicholidays.com.au. Neither day is a public holiday, so shops and cafés keep normal Sunday hours in both countries.
One quick sanity check: if you've seen 10 May quoted for Australia, that was 2026. The second Sunday of May 2027 is the 9th.
The UK's day is older and comes from the church calendar. Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday. Easter moves, so Mothering Sunday moves with it, landing anywhere from early March to early April.
Australia does it the American way: a fixed rule, the second Sunday in May, every year. It's the same date as the US. May is autumn over there, so think crisp mornings and a long lunch rather than daffodils.
The upshot is a gap that changes every year. In 2027 it's nine weeks. In 2028 it's seven. Either way, the UK card aisle will have moved on to Easter eggs long before Australia's day comes round, which is exactly how people forget it.
Simple rule: you celebrate the mum on the day of the country she lives in. In practice, families bend it.
Your day is still 7 March. The catch is that nothing in Australia will remind them. Every shop and advert over there is building up to May, and by the time the Mother's Day cards appear, they've missed you by weeks. A gentle nudge in February isn't fishing. It's logistics.
If you're new to this, Lewis's mum, Samantha, wrote honestly about missing her son in Australia, from the drive to the airport to the small habits that have kept them close since.
Her day is 9 May, and it's the one you're most likely to miss. Every UK shop, advert and inbox shouts about March, then goes quiet. Put 9 May 2027 in your phone today, with a second reminder two weeks before.
This is the one that catches grandparents out. Your daughter celebrates in May with her own kids, and you get to be the person who sends something for her. One habit we love: the grandkids ring Gran in March, and Gran sends something for their mum in May. Everyone gets a turn. If that's you, our page on gifts for your son or daughter in Australia is a good place to start.
By May both countries have settled. The UK is on British Summer Time (UTC+1) and New South Wales came off daylight saving on 4 April 2027, so Sydney is on AEST (UTC+10). That makes Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart and Brisbane 9 hours ahead of the UK, Adelaide and Darwin 8.5, and Perth 7.
| UK time | Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane | Perth | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sat 10pm | Sun 7am | Sun 5am | Catching the east coast before breakfast in bed |
| Sun 7am | Sun 4pm | Sun 2pm | An afternoon catch-up |
| Sun 9am | Sun 6pm | Sun 4pm | Before dinner: the sweet spot |
| Sun 11am | Sun 8pm | Sun 6pm | After dinner, feet up |
| Sun 1pm | Sun 10pm | Sun 8pm | Last call before bed in the east |
Our pick is a Sunday morning call from the UK with a brew in hand. She's had her day, the lunch is done, and she can tell you all about it.
Going the other way, for a child in Australia ringing a UK mum on Mothering Sunday, the gap is bigger. On 7 March 2027 the UK is on GMT and Sydney is on daylight saving, so Sydney is 11 hours ahead. Ring at 7pm or 8pm on your Sunday evening and she'll be up and about at 8am or 9am. Our UK to Australia time difference guide has every city and every clock change.
You can post something from the UK. Royal Mail's Australia country guide gives International Tracked a delivery aim of 5 to 7 working days, and our guide to sending a parcel to Australia from the UK covers the costs and the customs form. Food is where people come unstuck, so read can you send food gifts to Australia before packing the Hobnobs.
The easier route is to buy from inside Australia, so nothing crosses a border. A few options:
We're Lewis and Jess, and we pack every box by hand in Sydney. You order from the UK, and the box goes with Australia Post to her door. It's a domestic Australian delivery, so your gift never goes through customs. Prices are shown in pounds as a guide; you pay in Australian dollars and your bank converts at checkout.

For most mums we'd point you to the Gift Box for Her: a Collagen Hydration Mask, Botanical Bath Soak, Sculpted Bubble Candle, Crochet Comfort Companion, an A3 Matte Art Print, Candy Kittens Strawberry sweets and GNAW Milk Chocolate. It leans firmly towards pampering. If she's more of a "don't fuss" mum, the Hug Away From Home box is softer and a bit more sentimental, with a Hand-Poured Soy Candle (hand-poured in Australia), Marc de Champagne Truffles and the same little crochet pal. Or build your own box and choose every piece for her.
Both include the art print, which is A3 and unframed, so it suits a mum with a bit of wall space and a frame shop nearby. Your words live behind a QR code on a premium card inside the box: a message, a photo or a video, which she opens by pointing her phone camera at the code. Photos and videos replay for around six months, which beats a card that ends up behind the clock.

We pack Monday to Friday, and Australia Post usually takes 2 to 5 business days after dispatch to most addresses. Aim for the box to land by Friday 7 May 2027, so it's there for the weekend.
| Delivering to | Usual business days after dispatch | Dispatched by, to land by Fri 7 May |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | About 2 | Wednesday 5 May |
| Melbourne or Brisbane | About 3 | Tuesday 4 May |
| Adelaide | About 4 | Monday 3 May |
| Perth or Hobart | About 5 | Friday 30 April |
| Darwin | About 6 | Thursday 29 April |
Those are typical times, and regional and remote areas can take longer. Our honest advice: order in the week of 19 April and stop thinking about it. Tracking is emailed to you, so you'll see it arrive from the UK. Free delivery on every box, too.
Build your own
Choose every piece from the UK, pick a print that feels like them, then add your letter with a photo or video behind the QR card. We hand-pack it in Sydney and deliver it in Australia.
